Tennessee law begins with access, but the keeper and the record type control what a person can inspect. Hendersonville City Hall keeps ordinances, minutes, permits, planning files, contracts, and municipal police reports. Sumner County offices hold the durable county series that often carry names, such as deeds, parcel cards, marriage files, and trial-court dockets. State offices add appellate cases, vital certificates, and offender information.

The access channel also changes by series. Some indexes are free on the web. Others require a vendor, an office terminal, a focused written request, or a visit to an archive. Open status never means that each field is open. Its warning bars threats, intimidation, stalking, or harassment and notes possible criminal or civil consequences.

Note: Custody and supervision can change fast, so confirm current status with the responsible agency before relying on a saved result.

Tennessee Withholds Protected Record Details

The Tennessee Public Records Act does not erase separate confidentiality laws. Social Security numbers, government identification numbers, protected victim details, sealed court material, and actual addresses covered by Safe at Home are not made open merely because they sit inside a government file. Recent vital certificates remain entitlement-controlled. Motor-vehicle personal information is limited by the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act.

Safe at Home gives eligible survivors a substitute address and confidential mail-forwarding route. Agencies must not undo that protection through routine address disclosure. Recorded instruments also deserve care. If an image exposes a Social Security number or another protected identifier, contact the Register about the lawful redaction or correction process. That process may shield the private field while keeping the legal instrument and index intact.
